![]() If you’re looking for something that allows you to express yourself more, that’s where western RPGs shine. If you think about it, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt could arguably be JRPGs by that standard, even if they come from studios outside Japan.īut the narrative is not something that’s always wanted when someone picks up a game. ![]() There are rarely any dialogue choices, and if there are, they are usually already aligned with a character’s personality rather than the player’s. It’s because they already have a colorful cast of characters, each with their own personalities and mindsets. Both games are JRPGs and not because of the studios they’re from nor because they have an anime-esque art style. Consider some of the games on this list: Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Kingdom Hearts III. ![]() Players will control the characters and come along for the narrative ride rather than inserting themselves into the story, so it’s more about empathy. JRPGs are often built around a narrative, rich with story and drama and often has its own set of established characters. But what makes JRPGs different from a western RPG? It all boils down to why the players play the game and what they get out of it. If you like MMO’s that offer you a fun and challenging time then you can definitely do far worse than Skyforge. While there are a lot of subgenres of RPGs, the two main categories that split the genre is “RPG” and “JRPG”, the latter of which means “Japanese Role-Playing Game”. At the moment it does have a few niggling problems here and there but these can be easily rectified. At the end of the day I can definitely see Skyforge getting a healthy fan base here on Xbox One, and I can definitely see the game going from strength to strength over time. The sound design can also be good at times, but I must admit that I was looking for a lot more from the voice acting in the game. Visually the game can look fantastic at times and it offers you lots of detail, which is great. The presentation side of the game has quite a lot of good going for it, especially when it came to the visuals. I will say however that in order to get the best loot you will have to grind for considerable periods and this can become boring after a while. The character creation in the game also has a lot of variety, and without a doubt it offers you character creations that are up there with the best game’s in the genre. Each enemy gives you a different challenge and this means things stay fresh and interesting, which is great. Thankfully the game doesn’t suffer with a lack of variety in other areas though, and that’s especially the case when it comes to the enemies you face in the game. I will say though that the side missions can become boring quite quickly and the main reason for that is the lack of variety they have. There is a decent amount of content for you to sink your teeth into and the best thing is that each different mode is very fun and each mode has quite clearly had a lot of effort put into them. Thankfully Skyforge is a very good addition to the MMO genre and I can see it providing enjoyable moments for some time to come. Thankfully I have sunk a great deal of hours into MMO’s over the years and I’ve had a lot of very enjoyable moments over the years as well.
